Ebenezer Winch

Name Ebenezer Nikola Winch

Position Townie

Second Position Townie

Character Information

Gender Male
Species Mutant
Mutant Name Pulse
Age 35

Physical Appearance

Height 6’ 4”
Weight 214 lbs.
Hair Color Dark Brown (with bluish tints in the right light)
Eye Color Dark Blue
Physical Description Pulse has a diagonal scar running through his right eyebrow due to an accident at the ironworks. It very nearly blinded him in his right eye. He has long, dark brown hair about shoulder length and a rather scraggly beard of the same color. In the glimmer of the right light, one might catch a glimpse of dark blue imbuing both hair and beard. Despite his mutant ability, the work at the foundry was hard and he built up a decent amount of muscle while working there. When he has to leave his Hometown and travel the wastelands in between, he wears a brown mask and breather/respirator. Pulse also has brown colored goggles with amber tinted lenses.

He wears steel toed boots with metal clasps and latches. Around his forearms and under the sleeves of his shirts, Pulse wears leather bracers with steel rings and studs attached. The various buckles, clasps, rivets, chains, rings, and thin metal plating he wears aids in his ability to enhance and further control his powers. Pulse can’t fly, but he can manipulate an electromagnetic field around a piece of metal and make it levitate twelve inches from the ground. It’s enough, however, that he can propel himself in any direction quickly. When he does it prolonged, it takes a lot out of him physically. With all of the metal, the scraggly beard, the scar on his right eyebrow and the ‘mean’ look of his resting face, Pulse looks unapproachable. And for the most part, he rolls with that perception.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Profession(s): Outdoor Farmer > Ironworks > Recovery Team

Pulse’s resting expression looks mean and unapproachable. He allows that perception to continue even if it’s not completely fitting. He likes his solitude and isn’t much of a social person at all. He’s generally quiet and has a sense of humor that borders on sarcasm. Though he has been known to cross that border on a regular basis.
Strengths & Weaknesses + can hold his own in a [dirty] fight or confrontation (without his mutant ability)

- blunt and straight shooting honesty
Ambitions To stay alive day to day, bringing another twenty-four hours of survival in this god-forsaken hellscape. Investigate the weird death of his parents, as much as possible without a medical community or technology.
Hobbies & Interests Who has time for any of that when you’re just trying to survive? Nah, he likes tinkering with small to medium scale metal items to include the tiny inner workings in his solitude. He’s experimented with larger scale items, but they physically exhaust him quickly. He has a two bedroom apartment and uses the second as his shop for tinkering.
Mutation Mutant Traits
Metal Manipulation: The power to manipulate metal and electromagnetic fields. Pulse can manipulate electromagnetism which accounts for almost all physical phenomena observable to the unaided human senses, including light and other electromagnetic radiation. He can also shape and manipulate metal, a solid material (an element, compound, or alloy) that is typically hard, shiny, and features good electrical and thermal conductivity. Metals are generally malleable—they can be hammered or pressed permanently out of shape without breaking or cracking—as well as fusible (able to be fused or melted) and ductile (able to be drawn out into a thin wire).

Discovered Sub-trait Abilities
• Electroreception: Sense bio and natural generated electromagnetic fields and phenomenon.
• Metal Detection: Can sense metals, even down to metal dust.
• Attraction, Repulsion, and Deflection: Attract & repel metallic objects and deflect metallic projectiles away.
• Demagnetization: Removing magnetic properties from ferrous metals.
• Manipulate the properties of metals: Polish, repair, liquefy, solidify, fold, etc.
• Electrokinetic Levitation: Levitate items by using electromagnetic energy. Ability to use EM energy to levitate and move metal and metallic objects. And occasionally ride metallic objects.
• Electromagnetic Attacks/Defenses - Utilize electromagnetism in forms of attacks/defenses.
-- Zap: Utilize an existing electromagnetic field to 'zap' a tiny and short release of electromagnetic energy to cause pain or discomfort; too low-powered to be destructive or even stun.
-- Electromagnetic Wave Emission: Utilizing an existing electromagnetic field to send out a wave of electromagnetism that repels everything. (wave is limited to a certain range before dissipation and it weakens the user)

Undiscovered Sub-trait Abilities
• Undiscovered, but in mutated genetics = Radio Frequency Distortion: Block walkie talkie and radio frequencies using his abilities.
• Undiscovered, but in mutated genetics = overload or short-circuit electrical systems.
• Undiscovered, but in mutated genetics = By concentrating, Pulse can see the world around him solely as electromagnetic energy patterns produced by living organisms and naturally occurring EM fields.

Sub-trait Weaknesses
• When his powers are used, a blue-colored (with a dark umbrae) electromagnetic energy swirls around his hands and arms; this makes it hard for him to use them secretly.
• Pulse is unable to create metal and is only able to use his metal manipulation powers when any metal is in close range.
• Pulse is unable to create electromagnetic fields and is only able to use what is already in existence, naturally or biologically.
• As the strength of an electromagnetic field weakens or diminishes, so does the effectiveness of this power.
• He can only electromagnetically generate levitations twelve inches from the ground.
• Prolonged levitation and/or propulsion drains him physically.
• The size, weight, mass, precision, and distance of his targets limit the effectiveness of his metal and electromagnetic field manipulation power.
• EM Wave Emission sub-trait weakens Pulse physically.
• Anti-Electromagnetic Field Projection counters his EM powers.
• Metal is affected by everything that normal metals would be; melts under extreme heat, turns brittle and shatters under extreme cold, can be rusted, and susceptible to corrosion. The user is able to use their power to return the metal to its original shape.
• User is extremely vulnerable to Electricity Manipulation as metal conducts electricity.

Personal History Character Introduction (Origin Story):
The world has changed. People have changed. Some for the better, some for the worst. And some…some are a little bit of both. Me, I don’t exactly know yet. I can’t remember much of life before the Pulse. I was only five. Now I’m thirty-five, but that doesn’t matter. Age is just a number anymore. What really matters is survival. Thirty years ago we lost everything. All of us. The whole damn planet. My parents did their best to survive and keep me alive. They died when I was sixteen. And here I am, Ebenezer Nikola Winch, making my way through this hell the best I can.

One thing I can remember, though, is that my parents told me how scared they got when the mutant abilities started appearing after the Electromagnetic Pulse. Dad was scared for the family’s safety. Mom was scared that I’d become one. Both were valid. When I was about seven, I started getting these weird feelings. They intensified when I was close to any metals or metal particles. I could ‘sense’ them, if you want to call it that. Oh, and feeling the electromagnetic fields…that one was trippy. I told my parents and they tried to hide it all. And me. After a while, I started learning to manipulate the metals and electromagnetic fields. Then came the wars.

My family never got involved directly or indirectly in the wars. My parents said they couldn’t consciously choose sides what with my powers. Then sometime in 10 AP, when I was fifteen, there came a relative calm and end to the wars. The humans and the mutants didn’t completely trust each other…and we still don’t. Despite it, we have learned to live in an awkward harmony. Transporters and teleporters make you pay out the ass for quick transportation to places…regardless if you’re human or mutant. Mutants that can sense and control water seem to be pretty well taken care of by the agriculturists. Though I’ve met some that use their powers to make their own lives better. And why the hell not?

But then the next year happened. My parents died when I was sixteen. I don’t really talk about it much. It was natural causes, they say. The healing mutants said that it was long-term residual effects of the Pulse, but didn’t go into specifics. Never been sure if I believed them or not. Anyway, we couldn’t afford more than a couple more visits from them. Again, charging out the ass. I ended up just making them comfortable with herbal remedies in the end.

I continued living in our tiny apartment…housing unit…mod…whatever, afterwards and started working where my dad worked on one of the outdoor farms. Five long shifts a week…that was hard for a sixteen year old that had just lost his parents. But it was outdoors and it was life. I decided to put my mutant abilities to good use two years later and got a job at the ironworks. Damned if they weren’t in a hurry to hire a mutant that could manipulate metal and electromagnetic fields. The first year I worked there, the other mutants started calling me Pulse. You know, an electromagnetic pulse started it all and gave me metal and electromagnetic powers. I worked there from eighteen to thirty years old and did decently for myself.

For the last five years, I’ve been on a Recovery Team. We go into the abandoned cities to scavenge and salvage what we can for our Hometown. We stumble across all kinds of interesting things, but we’re after what’s on our lists. Sometime I’d like to go out there on my own time and explore. Who knows? So here I am, Ebenezer Nikola Winch, making my way through this hell the best I can. But you can call me Pulse.
